The Future of Seamless Air Travel: Digital Identity in Action

What if your next airport experience allowed you to breeze through check-in, security, and boarding—all without fumbling for documents? It’s not just a vision anymore; it’s becoming a reality.

Branchspace was proud to collaborate with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and leading industry players on a groundbreaking Proof of Concept (PoC) with real life integrations that showcased the potential of a fully digital travel experience. This innovation journey, tested in a live environment on a round-trip between Hong Kong and Tokyo, demonstrated how digital identity can revolutionise air travel.

‍
The Singapore Entry Card Example: The Power of Digital Identity

‍

Take Singapore as an example—where entry processes are moving toward fully digital solutions. Travellers can now submit their details seamlessly in advance. Globally, more airports are investing in similar solutions:

  • 30% of airports have already implemented digital identity initiatives across check-in, bag drop or border immigration.
  • 45% of airports plan to implement digital identity initiatives across check-in, bag drop or border immigration by 2026.
  • In 2024, 45% of travellers used some form of digital identity at the airport
  • 73% of passengers would like to use them as a replacement for passports and boarding passes in the future.
    ‍

These figures are a clear signal: travellers demand efficiency, and airports are stepping up to deliver.

A Collaborative Effort: A Digital Milestone

‍

As part of IATA’s innovation stream, Branchspace contributed to the successful demonstration of digital identity in live airport operations for two Cathay Pacific customers who:

  • Used digital wallets to store credentials like their ePassport, visa, and frequent flyer membership.
  • Leveraged biometric identification to navigate the journey without the need for repeated document checks.
  • Received personalised offers, booked flights, and managed their travel seamlessly.

‍

This success would not have been possible without the dedication and expertise of our talented team, including Tomasz Wisniewski, our Mobile App Developer who played a key role in this project.

Tomasz shares his thoughts on this milestone:

“It made me proud for Branchspace and my colleagues to participate and contribute to such an innovative and global endeavour. As leveraging Verifiable Credentials and Digital Identity Wallets has the potential to positively impact the lives of millions of air travelers, I will echo thoughts shared by other participants and admit that it is surely a historic point for the aviation industry and a big step forward in terms of a seamless and fully digital air travel experience.”

‍

Andrew Webster, our Director Offer and Order Management Consulting, reflects:

“This PoC proved the industry is ready to deliver a fully digital air travel experience. The collaboration between airlines, airports, and technology providers highlights the possibilities of seamless journeys powered by digital identity.”

‍

At Branchspace we are all about seamless travel, end-to-end, and re-inventing digital. We played a pivotal role by adapting our Triplake On the Go mobile app to reflect Cathay Pacific's customer experience, integrating it with verifiable credentials, and leading the charge on interactions with airline commercial systems.
